If you haven’t landed at the Iceway at Alton Bay, NH, you have to try it! My flight instructor and I were already on a planned trip to KLCI in Laconia, but decided to take a detour instead, and boy, was it worth it!
This is the only FAA and state sanctioned Iceway in the U.S. The runway is 2600’ x 100’ with a 40’ wide taxiway. The Iceway has been in operation for more than 30 years and is typically open from late January or early February into March. This year the ice is more than 14″ thick. In warmer months, the Iceway is actually the Alton Bay Seaplane Base.
It was incredible experience, and I am glad that I got to do it. It is surreal once you realize that you landed on and are taxing on a frozen lake with bob houses nearby, snowmobiles cruising next to the air strip and crowds of people watching the action.
Pilots: David Hurlburt (student) and Devan Wiebe (CFI – Noble Air Ventures, 6B6, Stow, MA). Plane: Cessna Skyhawk.
